Early Life and Medical Training

Born into a family with a 300-year tradition in medicine, Oliver Kharraz’s path to healthcare was both natural and deeply rooted in legacy. He pursued his medical education at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Germany, where he earned both his M.D. and a doctorate in neuroscience. Following his academic achievements, he trained in internal medicine at the University Hospital of Munich, gaining hands-on experience in patient care.

Transition to Healthcare Consulting

After his medical training, Kharraz joined McKinsey & Company as an Associate Principal, where he spent seven years developing and implementing patient utilization models for national health services and major hospital chains. This experience provided him with a comprehensive understanding of healthcare systems and the challenges they face.

Founding Zocdoc

In 2007, Kharraz co-founded Zocdoc in New York City alongside Cyrus Massoumi and Nick Ganju. The platform was conceived to address the common frustration of finding timely medical appointments. Initially focusing on dental appointments in Manhattan, Zocdoc expanded rapidly, offering services across the United States and encompassing over 100 medical specialties.

Leadership and Innovation

Kharraz’s leadership was pivotal during the COVID-19 pandemic, as Zocdoc swiftly adapted by offering telehealth services and developing tools to facilitate vaccine appointments. The company’s vaccine scheduler partnered with hospitals like Mount Sinai, booking over 100,000 appointments, sometimes at a rate of 100 per minute.

In 2019, Zocdoc transitioned its pricing model from a subscription-based system to a per-booking fee structure. This change led to a 50% increase in the number of providers on its platform and a 35% year-over-year revenue growth.

Recognition and Future Vision

Kharraz’s contributions to healthcare have been widely recognized. In 2021, he was named one of Modern Healthcare’s 100 Most Influential People, an honor that underscores his impact on the industry. His vision for Zocdoc extends beyond appointment booking; he aims to integrate artificial intelligence to further streamline healthcare access. In 2025, Zocdoc introduced an AI-powered phone assistant capable of handling multiple calls simultaneously, booking appointments, and reducing wait times.

Personal Life

Despite his professional achievements, Kharraz maintains a private personal life. He resides in Brooklyn, New York, with his wife and their twin daughters. His upbringing in a family of doctors and his own medical training continue to influence his approach to healthcare, emphasizing the importance of patient-centered care and the integration of technology to improve access and efficiency.

From Medicine to Innovation

Oliver Kharraz’s journey from a medical professional to a tech entrepreneur exemplifies how innovation can address longstanding challenges in healthcare. Through Zocdoc, he has created a platform that simplifies the process of finding and booking medical appointments and sets the stage for the future of healthcare delivery. His commitment to improving healthcare access and efficiency continues to shape the industry, making him a significant figure in the ongoing transformation of healthcare services.
