Early Life and Education

Jagath Wanninayake was born and raised in Sri Lanka before moving to the United States for higher education. From a young age, he exhibited a keen interest in problem-solving and systems thinking traits that would later define his entrepreneurial journey. He pursued his undergraduate studies at Swarthmore College, one of the most prestigious liberal arts institutions in the U.S., where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics with a concentration in Public Policy. This academic foundation gave him a unique lens into both the macroeconomic and regulatory forces shaping the healthcare and technology industries. His time at Swarthmore helped sharpen his analytical skills and his passion for innovation, social impact, and strategic leadership, setting the stage for his future ventures in clinical trial technology.

From Clarix to Suvoda: A Legacy of Visionary Scaling

Jagath began his journey by co‑founding Clarix LLC, where he led development of the first fully web‑integrated randomization and trial supply management system, setting a new industry benchmark in deployment speed. Over six years, Clarix expanded from a three‑person startup to a 100‑person multinational, serving three of the top five and 11 of the top 25 pharmaceutical companies globally. Under his leadership, Clarix enjoyed triple‑digit annual revenue growth and over 95% client retention, ultimately leading to acquisition by Phase Forward (now Oracle).

Transitioning from Clarix, Jagath then co‑founded  Suvodain 2012 alongside Robert Hummel. Since then, Suvoda has grown into a series C company with more than 300 employees as of late 2022. Headquartered in Conshohocken, PA, the company has built powerful clinical-trial management platforms like IRT, eConsent, eCOA, and ePatient supporting 1,500+ trials across 95+ countries.

Awards & Recognition

In 2017, Jagath earned the prestigious EY Entrepreneur of the Year award for Greater Philadelphia, recognized for leading Suvoda from a six‑person startup to a multinational operation within four years all without outside funding.

Leadership Anchored in Purpose

The term “Suvoda” from Sanskrit meaning “the dawn of well‑being” reflects the deep purpose behind Jagath’s work to ease the complexity of clinical trials and bring life‑saving treatments to patients faster and safer. He also serves on the board of the Eastern PA Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and acts as an active mentor and angel investor for tech startups.

A Forward-Looking Leadership Style

Jagath emphasizes balanced innovation. In a 2024 conversation, he noted how the industry is shifting from idealizing fully virtual trials to embracing hybrid models that blend digital and in-person designs for better accessibility and effectiveness . He also highlighted the growing role of AI in accelerating drug development and simulation, while stressing the need for human oversight to ensure safety, ethics, and accuracy.

Academic & Early Background

Jagath holds a B.A. in economics with a concentration in public policy from Swarthmore College. He began his career in venture capital, focusing on enterprise software and telecommunications before launching Clarix.

Why “Suvoda’s” powerful leadership matters:

  • Suvoda underscores his commitment not to innovation for its own sake, but to delivering tools that make complex clinical trials manageable and meaningful.
  • Suvoda aligns with his personal journey from clinician tech pioneer at Clarix to a guiding voice in modern, hybrid, AI-informed trial design.
  • Suvoda embodies his entrepreneurial spirit, community focus, and the tangible impact of his leadership on improving trial delivery and patient outcomes.

In a landscape of healthcare innovation, Suvoda’s Jagath Wanninayake stands out not as a distant tech CEO, but as a powerful leader driven by clarity of purpose, grounded human oversight, and a record of real-world execution.
