Jeff Wang leads Windsurf as CEO, guiding the AI coding company to simplify software creation for developers worldwide. His journey blends engineering skill, startup grit, and a calm hand in crises, making tech projects smoother and faster.
Jeff grew up in Chicago, drawn to tech and engineering from a young age. He holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan and an MBA from UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, mixing technical know-how with business strategy.
His career started at giants like Salesforce and Cisco, mastering sales, program management, and tech delivery. These roles taught him to manage teams and projects under tight deadlines.
Later, he moved into executive roles at startups such as Tonkean and TomoCredit, honing skills in rapid growth and operational efficiency.
Building Ventures
In 2018, Jeff co-founded RocketFuel Education, an online school offering straightforward lessons on crypto, economics, AI, and venture capital. It grew to over 2 million members through his “Rich Dad Crypto” series, empowering regular folks to navigate complex markets.
By 2021, he became a General Partner at RNR Capital, angel investing in startups that reached unicorn status. This track record shows his talent for backing ideas that scale simply and effectively.
Leading Windsurf
Jeff joined Windsurf in mid-2023 as Founding Head of Business, growing the team and customer base for their agentic IDE, a tool that uses AI agents to assist with coding directly in the editor, cutting hassle and speeding up work.
On July 10, 2025, after original CEO Varun Mohan left for Google amid failed OpenAI talks, not a full acquisition, Jeff stepped in as interim CEO. He navigated a bleak weekend, securing the Cognition acquisition by July 14 to save the company. About 250 employees stayed on, and Graham Moreno was promoted to President.
His style is steady and team-focused: sharing honest updates, prioritizing staff equity and payouts, and turning chaos into momentum. This approach scaled Windsurf for developers, partners, and enterprises alike.
Key Achievements
Jeff helped launch Windsurf as the pioneering agentic IDE, integrating AI like Cognition’s Devin for task planning, code generation, and reviews, slashing project times from days to hours.
The 2025 Cognition deal brought teams together to advance AI-driven development while safeguarding employees’ futures. Through RNR Capital, his investments fueled unicorn successes, and RocketFuel reached millions with practical tech education.
These efforts prove his knack for efficiency: freeing creators from routine tasks so they can pursue bold innovations.
Personal Approach
Jeff brings warmth and resilience. He stays composed in storms, values people over process, and solves problems head-on. During Windsurf’s crisis, he rallied the team with transparency, rebuilding confidence fast.
Rooted in engineering, as his dad said, “be an engineer,” he communicates clearly, making advanced AI feel approachable and human. No buzzwords, just practical steps that work.
Jeff envisions tighter AI-human collaboration in coding, evolving Windsurf and Cognition into tools that handle drudgery so innovators thrive. He’ll expand RocketFuel’s educational reach and scout more startups, simplifying the tech frontier.
His focus remains on enabling dreams: faster projects, empowered teams, and accessible AI for all.
