Every day, businesses receive thousands of emails, and cybercriminals continue to find new ways to exploit them. As phishing attacks become more sophisticated and personalized, traditional email security tools often struggle to keep up. Against this backdrop, cybersecurity startup AegisAI has announced a $36 million Series A funding round to expand its AI-native email security platform and strengthen its ability to protect organizations from modern email threats.

Battery Ventures Leads $36 Million Series A Round

AegisAI has secured $36 million in Series A funding in a round led by Battery Ventures. Existing investors Accel and Foundation Capital also participated in the investment. With this latest round, the company has raised a total of $49 million since its founding.

The company said the new capital will support the continued development of its platform, expand its engineering and go-to-market teams, and help meet growing demand for advanced email security solutions.

Founded by Former Google Security Experts

AegisAI was founded by Cy Khormaee and Ryan Luo, both of whom previously worked on Google’s security technologies. During their time at Google, they contributed to products including Safe Browsing and reCAPTCHA, gaining experience in protecting billions of users from online threats.

The founders launched AegisAI with the goal of addressing the growing challenge of sophisticated email attacks that traditional security systems often fail to detect.

Using AI to Detect Modern Email Threats

The company develops an AI-native email security platform designed to stop phishing, business email compromise (BEC), malware, and other advanced email attacks before they reach users’ inboxes.

Unlike conventional email security tools that mainly rely on predefined rules and known threat indicators, AegisAI’s platform uses its own large language models (LLMs) together with AI agents to analyze emails more like a human security analyst. The platform evaluates the context, intent, language, sender behavior, and other signals to identify potentially harmful messages.

According to the company, this approach helps detect sophisticated attacks, including AI-generated spear phishing emails that may evade traditional security systems.

Responding to a Changing Threat Landscape

The rapid rise of generative AI has made phishing campaigns more convincing and easier to produce at scale. Attackers can now create highly personalized emails that closely resemble legitimate business communications, increasing the risk of fraud and credential theft.

AegisAI aims to address this challenge by applying AI throughout the email inspection process rather than depending only on static detection methods. The company believes that security systems must continuously adapt as cyber threats evolve.

Funding to Support Growth

The company plans to use the Series A funding to further enhance its technology, grow its engineering organization, and expand its go-to-market operations. The investment is expected to help AegisAI scale its platform as more organizations seek stronger protection against increasingly sophisticated email attacks.

The funding also reflects continued investor confidence in cybersecurity companies that are developing technologies to address emerging digital threats, particularly those driven by advances in artificial intelligence.

Looking Ahead

Email remains one of the most common entry points for cyberattacks, and the rise of AI-generated phishing campaigns has increased the need for more advanced security solutions. By combining proprietary large language models with AI agents, AegisAI is working to provide organizations with a more adaptive approach to email protection.

With $36 million in fresh funding and backing from experienced investors, the company is positioned to continue developing its platform and expand its reach as businesses look for better ways to defend against evolving cyber threats.
