Global coatings company Hempel has appointed Eric Alström as its new Group President and Chief Executive Officer, marking an important leadership change for the Denmark-based business. Alström will officially assume the role on August 1, 2026, following the departure of former CEO Michael Hansen in June. With decades of international leadership experience and a strong understanding of Hempel’s business, he will now lead the company into its next phase.
Hempel Announces Leadership Change
Hempel confirmed Eric Alström’s appointment in an official announcement on July 3, 2026. He succeeds Michael Hansen, who stepped down as Group President and CEO in June.
During the transition period, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Peter la Cour Gormsen and Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Emilie Barriau jointly led the company until a permanent CEO was appointed.
The Board of Directors selected Alström after considering his extensive leadership experience and his previous involvement with Hempel.
Brings More Than Three Decades of Experience
Eric Alström has more than 30 years of leadership experience in global industrial businesses. Throughout his career, he has held senior executive positions across Europe, the United States, Japan, and China.
Before joining Hempel, Alström served as President of Danfoss Power Solutions. The business is one of the world’s leading providers of mobile and industrial hydraulics and electrification technologies. During his time there, he led the company’s largest business segment and focused on profitable organic growth, strategic acquisitions, and customer-focused innovation.
Alström also holds a Master’s degree in Management from Stanford Graduate School of Business.
Strong Connection with Hempel
Although Eric Alström is new to Hempel’s executive leadership team, he already knows the company well. He served as Vice Chair of Hempel’s Board of Directors from 2017 to 2024.
His previous board role gave him a deep understanding of the company’s strategy, operations, and long-term goals. That experience is expected to help him transition smoothly into his new position as Group President and CEO.
Board Expresses Confidence
Richard Sand, Chair of Hempel’s Board of Directors, welcomed Eric Alström to the role and highlighted his international leadership background. He said Alström has consistently delivered strong business results while building customer-focused organisations and leading successful transformations.
According to the Board, his leadership experience and knowledge of Hempel make him well suited to guide the company through its next stage of development.
Eric Alström Looks Ahead
Commenting on his appointment, Eric Alström said he is honoured to return to Hempel in a new capacity. He described Hempel as a company with a strong culture, talented employees, and a clear foundation for future growth.
He said he looks forward to working closely with employees, customers, and business partners to continue building on the company’s strengths and delivering value for its stakeholders.
A New Chapter for Hempel
Eric Alström will officially begin his role on August 1, 2026, as Hempel continues its leadership transition. His appointment brings together decades of international management experience and previous knowledge of the company through his years on the Board.
With a new chief executive in place, Hempel enters its next chapter with a focus on continuing its business strategy while serving customers across its global markets.
