Katrina Lake, founder of Stitch Fix, built one of the most innovative fashion companies in the United States by combining technology with personal styling. She launched the company in 2011 while studying at Harvard Business School, turning a simple idea into a publicly traded business. Stitch Fix later went public in 2017, and Lake became the youngest woman at the time to lead a company to an initial public offering. The company’s success reflects how data science and retail can work together to improve the way people shop for clothes.

Early Life and Education

Katrina Lake was born on December 24, 1982, in San Francisco, California. She grew up in a family that valued education and hard work. Her father was a physician who taught at the University of California, San Francisco, and her mother worked as a teacher.

Lake attended Stanford University, where she studied economics. During her time there, she developed an interest in business and the growing influence of technology on different industries. Although she had once considered pursuing medicine like her father, she eventually decided to explore the business world.

After graduating from Stanford, Lake worked as a consultant at The Parthenon Group. She later joined Polyvore, a fashion-focused social commerce company, where she learned more about how people discover and shop for clothing online. These experiences gave her insight into the retail industry and helped shape the idea that would later become Stitch Fix.

Lake later enrolled at Harvard Business School to pursue an MBA. While studying there, she began thinking about how technology could make clothing shopping easier and more personal.

The Idea That Started Stitch Fix

While at Harvard, Katrina Lake noticed that many people found shopping for clothes stressful and time-consuming. Online stores offered thousands of choices, but finding items that matched personal style, size, and budget was still difficult.

Katrina Lake believed technology could help solve this problem. In a letter to investors during the company’s early years, she explained the thinking behind the idea:

“I founded Stitch Fix to take on a very human problem: How do I find clothes I love?”

In 2011, she started the company from her apartment in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The business was initially called Rack Habit. Lake worked with Erin Morrison Flynn, a former buyer at J.Crew, who helped with early merchandising and product selection.

The concept was simple but new. Customers filled out an online style profile, and stylists selected clothing based on their preferences. Each customer received a box with a few clothing items to try at home. They could keep what they liked and return the rest.

At the beginning, Lake handled many parts of the business herself. She used spreadsheets to track customer preferences and even used personal credit cards to buy early inventory while testing the idea.

Building a Technology-Driven Fashion Business

As more customers began using the service, Stitch Fix started to build a stronger technology foundation. Lake believed that data could improve the shopping experience if it was combined with human insight.

The company hired engineers and data scientists to develop algorithms that could analyze customer information such as size, style preferences, feedback, and purchase history. These tools helped stylists choose clothing that matched each customer’s taste.

One important addition to the team was Eric Colson, a former Netflix data scientist who later became the company’s chief algorithms officer. His work helped Stitch Fix create a system where machine learning and human stylists worked together.

Customers receive a “Fix,” a box containing five clothing items selected for them. They try the items at home, keep what they want, and return the rest. The company uses customer feedback to improve future recommendations.

This approach helped Stitch Fix grow quickly. By 2016, the company reported revenue of about $730 million and had already reached profitability, something that many startups struggle to achieve.

Funding, IPO, and Expansion

Although investors were initially uncertain about the idea, Stitch Fix eventually attracted venture capital funding. The company raised about $42 million from investors, including Baseline Ventures and Benchmark, during its early years.

A major milestone came in November 2017 when Stitch Fix went public on the Nasdaq stock exchange. The initial public offering raised around $120 million and valued the company at approximately $1.6 billion.

At the time, Katrina Lake was 34 years old, making her the youngest woman to lead a company through an IPO. She was also the only woman that year to take a technology company public.

Following the IPO, the company continued to expand its services. Stitch Fix added clothing for men, children, maternity wear, and plus-size customers. It also launched operations in the United Kingdom and grew its workforce to include thousands of employees and stylists.

Leadership and Continuing Influence

In 2021, Katrina Lake stepped down as chief executive officer and moved into the role of executive chair of the company’s board. Elizabeth Spaulding, a former executive at Bain & Company, succeeded her as CEO.

Even after stepping back from the CEO role, Lake remained closely involved in the company’s long-term strategy and mission. She has also been recognized in several business rankings, including Forbes’ lists of successful self-made women and Fortune’s “40 Under 40.”

Katrina Lake’s leadership helped establish Stitch Fix as one of the best-known examples of how technology can reshape traditional retail. Stitch Fix changed the way many Americans shop for clothing by blending data science with personal styling. What began as a small startup in a Cambridge apartment grew into a public company serving millions of customers.

Katrina Lake’s journey shows how a simple idea, combined with persistence and innovation, can transform an industry. By focusing on customer needs and using technology in creative ways, Stitch Fix built a new model for online retail in the United States. Today, the company remains an important example of how entrepreneurship and technology can work together to improve everyday experiences for consumers.
