Ara Partners-backed Genera has appointed veteran manufacturing executive Mark Ushpol as its new Chief Executive Officer, marking a major leadership move as the sustainable packaging company expands its operations and production capacity in the United States.
The appointment comes at a time when demand for eco-friendly packaging solutions continues to rise across multiple industries. Genera, known for producing sustainable molded fiber products from locally grown grasses, said Ushpol will lead the company through its next stage of commercial growth and operational expansion.
Experienced Industry Executive Takes Leadership Role
Mark Ushpol brings decades of experience in industrial manufacturing, packaging, and global operations. Throughout his career, he has held senior leadership positions at several major companies, including Suominen, Ahlstrom, DS Smith, and Mondi.
Before joining Genera, Ushpol served as Executive Vice President for the Americas business area at Suominen. His experience includes overseeing manufacturing operations, driving commercial growth, and leading large-scale transformation projects across international markets.
In the company’s official statement, Ushpol said he was excited to join Genera during an important phase of growth. He also pointed to the company’s vertically integrated business model and focus on sustainable manufacturing as key strengths in the growing green packaging market.
Genera Expands Sustainable Packaging Operations
Genera operates one of North America’s largest vertically integrated non-wood fiber manufacturing platforms. The company converts perennial grasses into compostable packaging materials, molded fiber products, and biomaterials using advanced biorefining and thermoforming technologies.
The company recently completed a major expansion project at its manufacturing campus in Vonore, Tennessee. According to the official announcement, the expansion represents an investment of more than $340 million and significantly increases Genera’s production capacity.
Company officials said the expansion strengthens Genera’s ability to meet rising demand for sustainable alternatives to plastic packaging while also creating additional operational and commercial opportunities.
Leadership Transition Supports Future Growth
Ushpol succeeds Ben Mascarello, who previously led Genera through a major period of development and expansion. The company credited Mascarello for helping establish Genera’s manufacturing foundation and supporting the scale-up of its operations.
Genera is backed by Ara Partners, a private investment firm focused on industrial decarbonization and sustainability-related investments. In the announcement, Ara Partners said Ushpol’s operational expertise and leadership experience position him strongly to guide Genera through its next phase of growth.
As businesses worldwide continue shifting toward environmentally responsible packaging solutions, Genera is aiming to strengthen its position in the sustainable materials sector under its new leadership.
