Perkins Coie LLP is one of the oldest and most respected law firms in the United States. It was founded in 1912 in Seattle, Washington, and has grown into a major international law firm. Today, it serves clients in technology, finance, healthcare, energy, politics, real estate, and many other industries.

When the firm started in the early 20th century, Seattle was becoming a business and trade center. Local companies needed reliable legal advice to manage contracts, property, and government rules. Perkins Coie was created to fill this gap.

From the beginning, the firm focused on honest service, long-term relationships, and strong professional standards. As American business became more complex, the firm expanded its services and reach. It adjusted to new industries and legal challenges while staying true to its original values.

Founders & Early Leadership

Perkins Coie LLP did not begin under its current name. The firm started in 1912 as a small legal partnership. Over the years, several important lawyers helped shape its identity, especially George D. Perkins and J. Paul Coie.

George D. Perkins joined the firm in the early 20th century and later became a U.S. congressman. He brought strong leadership and public service values. J. Paul Coie also played a key role in developing the firm’s business and reputation. When their names became part of the firm’s title, “Perkins Coie” was born.

These early leaders believed that lawyers should serve both clients and society. Their commitment to ethics and quality work helped the firm earn trust in the business community.

Rise & Growth Journey

For its first few decades, Perkins Coie LLP mainly served businesses in the Pacific Northwest. After World War II, the firm began to grow faster as industries like aerospace, manufacturing, and technology expanded. A major turning point came when the firm started working with emerging technology companies. It became well known for advising startups and established tech firms, including long-term work with Microsoft in its early years.

During the 1990s and 2000s, Perkins Coie LLP expanded across the United States and into Asia. It opened offices in cities like New York, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Palo Alto, Chicago, Beijing, and Shanghai. This allowed the firm to serve clients with international operations. Like many law firms, it faced challenges during economic slowdowns and changes in the legal market. However, it remained competitive by investing in new practice areas and hiring skilled lawyers.

Products & Services

Perkins Coie LLP does not sell physical products. Instead, it provides professional legal services. Its main practice areas include:

  • Corporate law and mergers
  • Intellectual property and patents
  • Litigation and dispute resolution
  • Privacy and cybersecurity
  • Political and election law
  • Healthcare and life sciences
  • Energy and environmental law

The firm is especially known for its work with technology and venture capital companies. It helps startups raise funding, protect inventions, and follow regulations. Large corporations rely on the firm for complex legal disputes and global compliance.

For example, many young companies work with Perkins Coie from their early stages, using the firm’s guidance to grow safely and attract investors.

Achievements & Impact

Over more than 100 years, Perkins Coie has built a strong national and international reputation. Legal industry publications regularly rank it among leading U.S. law firms.

The firm employs more than 1,000 lawyers and operates more than 20 offices worldwide. While it does not publicly release full financial details, industry reports place it among the top law firms by revenue.

Perkins Coie has also played an important role in public interest and civil matters. Its lawyers have worked on voting rights cases, environmental protection, and nonprofit representation.

Through its business clients, the firm supports economic growth by helping companies expand responsibly. Through pro bono work, it helps individuals and communities who cannot afford legal services.

Culture & Values

Perkins Coie places strong importance on integrity, teamwork, and respect. The firm promotes diversity and inclusion through internal programs, hiring practices, and partnerships with legal organizations.

It encourages lawyers to give back to society. Each year, its attorneys provide thousands of hours of free legal help to immigrants, veterans, small charities, and low-income families.

The firm also invests in training young lawyers through mentoring and professional development programs. This focus helps maintain high standards across generations.

Leadership and the Role of the Managing Partner

Perkins Coie does not have a traditional Chief Executive Officer. Like most large law firms, it is led by a managing partner and a leadership team.

One of its recent leaders is Bill Malley, who has served as Managing Partner. In this role, he oversees the firm’s strategy, operations, and client relationships.

Under his leadership and that of other senior partners, the firm has focused on strengthening its technology, litigation, and regulatory practices. The leadership team also works to improve workplace culture and adapt to changes in how legal services are delivered.

Future Plans & Innovation

Looking ahead, Perkins Coie continues to invest in high-growth areas such as cybersecurity, data privacy, digital health, clean energy, and emerging technologies. As laws evolve around these fields, the firm aims to guide clients through new regulations and risks.

The firm is also expanding its support for startups and investors, reflecting the growing importance of innovation-driven businesses. In addition, it is improving digital systems and remote work tools to serve clients more efficiently. By combining legal experience with modern tools, Perkins Coie plans to remain competitive in a changing global market.

From its beginnings in Seattle in 1912 to its position as a global law firm, Perkins Coie LLP has built its success on trust, professionalism, and adaptability. Shaped by leaders such as George D. Perkins and J. Paul Coie, the firm developed a strong identity based on ethics and service. Today, with experienced leadership and a wide range of legal services, Perkins Coie continues to support businesses, nonprofits, and institutions across the United States and beyond. With its focus on quality, community, and innovation, the firm remains well prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
